Neighbours helping neighbours.

Our volunteers are critical to our operations. Quite simply, without volunteer involvement our organization could not function.  As a Meals on Wheels volunteer, you will be able to refresh your skills or learn new ones, meet interesting people, and increase your community contacts. Volunteers play an integral role at all levels of our operations including:

Volunteering for Meals on Wheels can be a family affair!

Meals on Wheels:
Every day our volunteer drivers deliver a fresh meal and a friendly smile to more than 300 clients in the Fredericton area. Drivers are asked to arrive at one of two depots (the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, or our own MOW Lunchbox kitchen on Hanwell) at about 10:45 to pick up insulated bags containing the hot meals and side items. Each route generally involves between 10 and 15 meals and takes about an hour to complete. At the end of the route, the bags are returned to the depot. Drivers must of course have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable car. We need drivers who will take on a regular route, as well as substitute drivers who will fill in on an occasional basis. We are in particular need of weekend drivers.

Wheels to Meals:
Wheels to Meals is a dine-out luncheon program that brings seniors together on a weekly basis to enjoy a meal in a group setting. Tasks include driving clients to and from the luncheon, helping in the kitchen, serving meals, and the musical entertainment is also provided by volunteer groups.

Note: We were forced to suspend this program in the Spring of 2020. We hope to be able to resume it soon.

Office Support:
An extra pair of volunteer hands in our office is always appreciated.  There are menus to be printed and organized, clients to be contacted, photocopying, shredding and folding to be done as well as any number of other ongoing tasks.

Special Events:
Occasionally we have promotional and fundraising events where any extra help is greatly appreciated. You could be asked to help hand out brochures, sell raffle tickets, or perhaps participate at bake, craft, or yard sales.

Member of the Board of Directors:
As a member of the Board of Directors you will be called upon to help guide the growth and development of Meals on Wheels of Fredericton Inc. while at the same time doing something valuable and meaningful for yourself. The commitment involves one meeting per month (usually lasting about 2 hours), and depending on your interest and expertise, you may be asked to join one of the board committees. Committee meetings generally take place once per month for one to two hours. Members of the Board of Directors are encouraged to become thoroughly familiar with the programs by occasionally volunteering as a Meals on Wheels driver and/or attending fundraising events. These commitments need not be any more frequent than is convenient for the volunteer. The time commitment for all volunteer roles is up to you. We would be happy to talk with you about the various roles and responsibilities, the time involved, or any other questions you may have.
